Biggest celebrity splits of 2012

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were probably one of the most-talked-about Hollywood couples of the year.

They announced they were calling it quits after five years of marriage on June 29, 2012. Holmes had filed for divorce in New York in June and less than two week later, they had reached an agreement. By August, the divorce case was officially closed. Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe said, "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." Cruise married Holmes in Italy in November 2006. They had one child together, daughter Suri.

Heidi Klum and Seal

Heidi Klum and Seal were one couple we thought could last. Between renewing vows and all of the cozy photos, their split came as a surprise to many.

The model and her singer beau announced their separation in January 2012, after nearly seven years of marriage. Klum officially filed for divorce in April 2012. The "Project Runway" star has since been dating bodyguard Martin Kristen.

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis announced on June 19, 2012,they were splitting after 14 years together. Depp's publicist confirmed the news to Entertainment Tonight: "Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have amicably separated. Please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children." The longtime couple have two children together.

Will Arnett and Amy Poehler

Even fun-loving married comedy duos can't always make it work. "Parks and Recreation" actress Amy Poehler and "Up All Night" star Will Arnett confirmed reports on Sept. 6, 2012, that they were splitting up after nine years of marriage. They have two sons.

Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito

And longtime couples also have challenges, too.

In October 2012, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman announced they were separating after 30 years of marriage. The former "Taxi" co-stars wed in 1982 and share three children. The state of their marriage, though, was in flux by early December when DeVito was asked about it. He responded, "We're working on it."

Tina and Joe Simpson

Jessica Simpson's parents, Tina and Joe Simpson, are headed for a divorce after 34 years of marriage. The family's rep told People on Oct. 24, 2012: "It is an amicable split and there is no third party involved. Any other related allegations are completely false. The family appreciates your respect for their privacy at this time."

Kenny G and Lyndie Benson-Gorelick

Kenny G played the final note on his marriage after 20 years. Court records show the musician filed for divorce in August 2012 in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences. He married Balynda Helene Benson-Gorelick in April 1992 and they have a 14-year-old son.

Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli

Longtime couple Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli announced in March 2012 that they were calling it quits after nearly 11 years or marriage. Court records show they each filed divorce petitions in Los Angeles. The pair are parents to three children: Luca, Lola and Fiona. Garth told People magazine that she was resistant to the split. By November, Facinelli had a new gal pal: actress Jaimie Alexander.

Mayim Bialik and Michael Stone

Actress Mayim Bialik revealed on Nov. 21, 2012, that she and Michael Stone, her husband of nine years, were headed for divorce. "After much consideration and soul-searching, Michael and I have arrived at the decision to divorce due to 'Irreconcilable Differences,'' the mother-of-two wrote. "Divorce is terribly sad, painful and incomprehensible for children. It is not something we have decided lightly." They met in college and have two children together.

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez

After nearly two years together, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez reportedly called it quits in the fall of 2012. A source told E! news that Gomez broke up with Bieber due to "their crazy schedules" and "trust issues." The couple first stepped out into the public eye in February 2011 when they attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party together.

Shortly after the reported split, Bieber and Gomez were spotted out together, so at last check, it's unclear what their status is.

Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington-Quaid

Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington-Quaid are called it quits in 2012. After announcing a separation in March and rekindling their romance two months later, the longtime couple revealed they were really parting ways. "Kimberly and Dennis Quaid have decided to legally separate after eight years of marriage. They ask that their privacy and the privacy of their family be respected during this difficult time," Quaid's rep told People on Oct. 19, 2012.

Chad Johnson and Evelyn Lozada

And sometimes divorces can get really ugly.

Chad Johnson's wife, Evelyn Lozada, filed for divorce after six weeks of marriage. The divorce filing comes after Johnson was arrested and charged with domestic battery. Lozada accused the football player of head-butting her during an argument. He was released from jail on $2,500 bond. According to TMZ, Lozada filed the papers claiming her marriage is "irretrievably broken." The two wed July 4, 2012 after their courtship was detailed on VH1's "Basketball Wives."

Gillian Anderson and Mark Griffiths

Gillian Anderson and her longtime beau, Mark Griffiths, called it quits in 2012. A rep told Us Weekly on Aug. 7, 2012, that the couple, who dated for six years, "amicably separated." Anderson and Griffiths have two sons together. The "X-Files" star was previously married to film art director Clyde Kotz, as well as documentary filmmaker Julian Ozanne.

Stevie Wonder and Kai Millard Morris

Stevie Wonder filed for divorce from his second wife, fashion designer Kai Millard Morris, after an 11-year marriage, TMZ reported on Aug. 3, 2012. He cited irreconcilable differences for the split in documents obtained by the website. Wonder requested joint custody of the couple's two sons: Kailand and Mandla. He agreed to pay Morris spousal and child support.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson

Many "Twilight" fans were disappointed to hear that Kristen Stewart admitted to cheating on her long-time co-star and love interest Robert Pattinson.

After Stewart was spotted getting cozy with married "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rubert Sanders, the actress quickly released an apology statement, saying how much she loves Pattinson. Reports said they broke up after that, but Stewart and Pattinson couldn't stay apart for too long. They have since been photographed out together in Los Angeles, and according to reports, they're giving love another try.

Russell Crowe and Danielle Spencer

Russell Crowe and his wife, Danielle Spencer, reportedly parted ways in 2012. Although Crowe's rep didn't confirm the split, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that the longtime couple separated after nine years of marriage. They met on the set of the 1990 film, "The Crossing" and have two children together, Charles and Tennyson.

By mid-December, Crowe hinted that a reconciliation could be in the works. "As soon as I finish this job and can get home, my priority is to try to bring my family back together," he said, according to Us Weekly.

Anne Vyalitsyna and Adam Levine

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and his girlfriend, Anne Vyalitsyna, ended their two-year relationship, a rep for the model confirmed to People on April 2, 2012. "Adam and I have decided to separate in an amicable and supportive manner. We still love and respect each other as friends. I wish him all the best," Vyalitsyna said in a statement.

Levine didn't waste much time; he's currently dating Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo.

Sinead O'Connor and Barry Herridge

Sinead O'Connor probably had one of the most bizarre break-ups of 2012. The Irish singer and Barry Herridge wed in early December, 2011 -- only to split two weeks later. They reconciled, but then parted ways again just two weeks into 2012. O'Connor wrote a series of blog posts on the subject, sometimes blaming the media for her marriage troubles.

Marcia Gay Harden and Thaddaeus Scheel

Actress Marcia Gay Harden and Husband Thaddaeus Scheel broke things off in February 2012 after 15 years of marriage. They have three children.

Emily Maynard and Jef Holm

Emily Maynard's second turn on ABC's "Bachelor" and "Bachelorette" series has ended in a broken engagement. After weeks of speculation, Maynard and Jef Holm confirmed their split to People on Oct. 16, 2012. Maynard described it as "a very difficult and heartbreaking decision.

In December, though, they were spotted out together. So, could a reconciliation be in the works?

Bethenny Frankel and Json Hoppy

Bethenny Frankel and husband Jason Hoppy are separating. The 42-year-old TV personality, chef, author and entrepreneur told The Associated Press on Dec. 23, 2012 that the split brings her "great sadness." "This was an extremely difficult decision that as a woman and a mother, I have to accept as the best choice for our family," Frankel said. "We have love and respect for one another and will continue to amicably co-parent our daughter who is and will always remain our first priority. This is an immensely painful and heartbreaking time for us."

Frankel and Hoppy were married in 2010 and have a daughter, Bryn, who was born that same year.
