2011 Indianapolis 500

Sunday, May 29, 2011, marked the 100th anniversary Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana. When the race debuted in 1911, the top average speed was 74.59 mph. Ray Harroun was declared winner, garnering the checkered flag in his six-cylinder Marmon Wasp after 6 hours and 52 minutes.

On the very first stop, Will Power, of Australia, drove out of the pits with a loose left rear wheel, which flew off before he got back on the track. He wound up 14th.

IndyCar pole-sitter Alex Tagliani, of Canada, led 20 laps but ran into handling problems that eventually sent him into the wall. He finished 28th.
