Walkscore.com attempts to figure out the best places to be to get around without four wheels. The website creates rankings based on a methodology that according to the site uses a algorithm to determine "how easy it is to live a car-lite lifestyle." They award an address points based on how far each amenity is from the location, with no points being given when an amenity is more than a mile away.

10. Oakland, Calif.
Often pinpointed for its sports teams, Oakland, Calif. is also touted as being very walkable. It falls in the number 10 spot in the list of most walkable cities. The area has a walk score of 68.2.
9. Minneapolis
Also known as the twin cities, this large metropolitan area has a walk score of 69.3.
8. Miami
A great place for surfers and beach-goers, this major city comes in at number eight with a score of 72.57. Washington, D.C.
Not just a place for politicians and good museums, the nations capitol is also perfect for people looking to go through the town on foot. With everything from the White House to the National Zoo at your finger tips this local comes in with a score of 73.

New York City comes out on top as the most walkable large city in the U.S. with a Walk Score of 85 out a of a possible 100. Every New Yorker will tell you and tourists will sometimes cringe at the amount of walking needed to get from place to place in the city that never sleeps.
