Video: Suicidal man opens fire on California officers

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - Officers called to the home of a suicidal subject had to run for cover when the man opened fire on them with an assault rifle last month.

On Thursday, the Orange County Sheriff's Department posted video of the April 27 incident to on their Facebook page "to demonstrate the extremely dangerous and unpredictable job that our deputies encounter."

Police say no one was injured in the shooting or subsequent arrest.

The dashcam video begins with officers, who had received a report of a suicidal man with a gun, driving to the home of Robert Fee, 39. The officers park across the street from the home, which has its garage door open, and about one minute after arriving, bullets start flying.

The officers run for cover, and there is a pause in the shooting, then the man opens fire a second time.

"The deputies were unable to return fire due to poor sight lines and concern that they couldn't see who else may have been inside the garage," according to the sheriff's department Facebook page.

Lee eventually comes out of the garage with his hands in the air and drops his weapon. He was taken into custody, assessed by both a medical and mental health professionals, and charged with three counts of attempted murder of a police officer, according to Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Stichter.

Lt. Stichter told CBS News that Lee has no previous criminal record.
