Tony Awards 2015: Kelli O'Hara wins best actress prize on her sixth attempt
Six is the charm for Kelli O'Hara -- she's won her first Tony Award.
O'Hara won Sunday for her role as the English school teacher in a revival of the classic 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I," co-starring Ken Watanabe.
"You'd think that I would have written something down by now but I haven't," an overjoyed O'Hara said as she accepted the prize. She also thanked her parents, telling them, "You don't have to pretend it's OK this time."
She thanked her co-star Ken Watanabe ("You are my king," she told him) and capped off her speech by declaring, "I'm going to do the worm!" and dancing off-stage.
O'Hara received her first Tony nomination for her performance as Clara in Adam Guettel's Tony-winning "The Light in the Piazza" in 2005.
She promptly racked up nominations in the following years for "The Pajama Game," "South Pacific" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." Last season she got No. 5 for "The Bridges of Madison County."
O'Hara beat out Kristin Chenoweth (one of the night's hosts, with Alan Cumming) from "On the Twentieth Century," Leanne Cope in "An American in Paris," Beth Malone from "Fun Home" and Chita Rivera in "The Visit."
