Tillerson and Kelly in Mexico; Views on economy and immigration

Meet the neighbors

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly are in Mexico City, meeting government officials including President Enrique Peña Nieto. The first visit of U.S. officials to the neighboring country since President Trump’s inauguration, amid strained U.S.-Mexico relations, will be a stark reminder of the complexities that shape the relationship between the two countries.

American views

Sixty-one percent of Americans now say the economy is in good shape -- the highest the figure has been in 10 years in CBS News polls. Improved views of the economy are driven largely by increased positive assessments among Republicans since President Trump took office. We also asked Americans to name the most important problem for the President and Congress to address this year.

Drugs policy

Drug policy and advocacy groups, alarmed by a New York Times report that the Office of Management and Budget has placed the White House’s Office of National Drug Control and Policy (ONDCP) on the chopping block, have banded together in the midst of a national opioid crisis to author a letter forcefully opposing the move.

ISIS fight

U.S.-backed Iraqi forces are pushing deeper into ISIS militants’ last urban bastion in Iraq, and coalition firepower is helping them do it. But the aerial support can only come as fast as the troops advance on the ground in the densely-packed city, and the Trump administration is eager to pick up the pace. The top commander in the region tells us that may require more U.S. boots on the ground.

Important work

A group of parents in New York is fighting for higher wages for workers at one of the nation’s largest early childhood education companies, Bright Horizons. When four teachers suddenly quit over low wages, a father discovered how much they were making -- and he was shocked.

Stress and weight

Stress may take a toll on your health in all kinds of ways. It’s been linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, a suppressed immune system, and sleep trouble. Now, there’s new evidence that people who experience chronic, long-term stress may also be more prone to weight gain and obesity.

Retirement crisis

New Census Bureau data show that two out of three workers with employer retirement plans aren’t socking away money, and fewer companies are offering such plans. The findings underscore the size of a looming retirement crisis exacerbated by a decades-long shift away from traditional pensions to 401(k)s.

California spillway

First the rain, now the drain. California’s wet winter has pushed Lake Berryessa in Napa County way beyond capacity, pouring water into its bathtub-like drain. It’s the first time that’s happened in 11 years.
