United Kingdom

Scots voted down the initiative that would have made Scotland an independent country. As CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips reports, the decision prevented a rupture of a 307-year union with England, bringing a huge sigh of relief to the British political establishment. Scots voted 55 percent to 45 percent against independence, and the turnout was unprecedented.

NFL admonished

The White House yesterday sternly told the NFL "it's important that the league get a handle" on players who commit child abuse and domestic violence and that the league must "have a zero tolerance" regarding those issues.

Alienating women?

When her young sons get older, Melissa Jacobs hopes they will prefer baseball or basketball over football. That may be surprising for the operator of a fantasy football site aimed at women. But her sentiment underscores the NFL's challenge following a maelstrom of negative publicity around the league's handling of domestic violence by a few of its players.

ISIS hostage

The video of fifth hostage was released by the fundamentalist Islamic group ISIS. In the video, British journalist, John Cantlie, reads from a script saying he has been abandoned by the U.K. and U.S. governments. CBS News correspondent Clarissa Ward reports that British Muslims have made a video of their own to distance themselves from the actions of ISIS.

Most Wanted

An intense late-night search concentrated on the area around 31-year-old Eric Frein's parents' home, with roads blocked and residents kept from their homes temporarily. The FBI has put Frein on its Most Wanted list. Police say they are eliminating possible hiding places for the suspect including hunting cabins, campsites and other occasional residences in the Pocono Mountains.

Kansas quandary

Watch Greg Orman's ads for his independent campaign for U.S. Senate, and it's clear he thinks one of his biggest political assets is the fact that he's neither a Democrat nor a Republican. He also puts one Senate seat the Republicans thought was theirs into contention.

Questioning mother

When a neighbor saw a 6-year-old boy playing outside by himself, she acted. Or did she overreact? CBS News correspondent Manuel Bojorquez looks at the fine line between differing parenting styles and policing parents.

Now what?

The Ice Bucket Challenge made ALS the summer's hottest cause, and raised more than $114 million. Now, reports CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller, charity watchers say the spotlight is on the ALS Association to see if it can responsibly manage and spend all that money.

Under Wonderland

The Counting Crows have been making us sing along to hits for more than 20 years but, reports CBS News Correspondent Anthony Mason, throughout that time, lead singer Adam Duritz struggled with a mental disorder that he says affected his music.

"Supermassive" black hole

A team of astronomers has made a rare find in a dwarf galaxy some 50 million light years away. NASA says they discovered that the tiny galaxy M60-UCD1 contains a "supermassive" black hole. A black hole is considered supermassive if it has the mass of at least one million stars like our sun; the one discovered in M60-UCD1 has the mass of 21 million suns.
