Trump, unchained

Donald Trump says he is now campaigning as a candidate who is unchained. He greeted more than 10,000 in Panama City last night, but said nothing about House Speaker Paul Ryan or other prominent Republicans who have distanced themselves from him. Instead, Trump mused repeatedly about the possibility of losing.

Clinton gains

A new poll shows Donald Trump recovering some losses after his performance in the second presidential debate. More Republican voters are also saying party lawmakers should keep backing the brash business tycoon’s bid to win the White House, but the overall news from the poll wasn’t necessarily good for the GOP nominee.

Clinton camp emails

Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, has said there was a “reasonable” chance that Donald Trump’s campaign had “advanced warning” about the latest Wikileaks hack that exposed thousands of Podesta’s emails. Podesta says a close Trump adviser suggested as much himself.

Looming battle

U.S. commanders who served in Mosul a decade ago are back, preparing Iraq’s own soldiers to retake the city from ISIS. Unlike on earlier tours, the commanders tell CBS News American troops are only there this time to train and advise -- not for combat, and they’re facing a weary enemy. But U.S. forces are out there, and there’s little safety in Iraq.

Speaking out

The response was explosive, offering a window into the scope of the problem in the country today. In light of the national discussion, Anita Hill tells us what she believes must happen next.

Teen drivers

Remain seated

The country’s largest grocer is adding curbside pickup to its online ordering service. The idea is simple: Order groceries through Walmart’s grocery app or on its website, drive to your local Walmart and employees will deliver them to your car, free. But Walmart faces a lot of hurdles -- and some hungry rivals planning similar services.

Gas tax hike

New Jersey will become the 19th state in three years to raise or reform its gasoline tax if, as expected, Republican Gov. Chris Christie signs off on the just-approved 23-cent hike. More than a dozen states have considered similar moves in the recent months as they scramble to fix their crumbling transportation infrastructure.

Serenaded grapes

An Italian winemaker expects a good crop of grapes this harvest thanks to a secret weapon: Mozart. The vineyard serenades its grapes with classical music, and scientists are watching closely to see how the vines react to Mozart’s melodies.
