These leftover 2017 cars offer some tasty bargains

Buying a new car, truck or SUV that's about to be replaced by a new, redesigned model might seem like a bad idea. Actually, it's one of the best times to negotiate a good deal, according to an analysis by Edmunds.com Dealers are eager to clear out the current models before the new versions arrive, so you can use that leverage to negotiate a favorable price.

Just because a current model is about to be replaced doesn't mean it shouldn't be on your shopping list, said Edmunds. Great deals await shoppers willing to forgo the latest features in favor of last year's models.

Here are some prime examples the car-buying site offered of popular models receiving significant upgrades for the 2018 model year:

Toyota Camry

The best-selling car in America gets an extensive redesign for the 2018 model year. It features more dramatic styling, improved fuel economy and additional safety features. Sales of the 2018 Camry begin this month, but you're likely to find plenty of 2017 models available. And as one of Edmunds' highest-rated midsize sedans, the 2017 Camry is a great all-around family vehicle.

Starting prices for the 2017 Toyota Camry range from $23,955 to $32,255.

Ford F-150

The best-selling truck in the U.S. is also getting some significant upgrades for 2018. Although not a full redesign, the 2018 F-150 features revised exterior styling, new tech features and upgraded engines. Sales don't begin until the fall, so there's plenty of time to find a 2017 model that suits your needs.

Starting prices for the 2017 Ford F-150 range from $28,405 to $64,920.

Honda Accord

This top-selling midsize sedan is unveiling a full redesign for 2018. Changes include sleeker exterior styling, updated technology and new turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The formerly optional V6 will be discontinued. The Accord was one of Edmunds' top-rated midsize sedans in 2017, though, so it's worth considering before the new version goes on sale this fall.

Chevrolet Traverse

If you're looking for a deal on a big, three-row family vehicle, Chevy's Traverse crossover is a good place to start. An all-new, fully redesigned model arrives this fall, but you can find plenty of 2017 models. And in this case, your family might actually prefer the current model since it's considerably bigger inside than the redesigned version, which has been downsized.

Subaru Crosstrek

This popular compact crossover is unveiling a full redesign for the 2018 model year, but it doesn't go on sale until August. That leaves time to find a deal on the 2017 models still on the lots. Although the new model is a complete redesign, it's similar in size and style, so if you're willing to forgo some of the new model's upgraded tech features, the savings on a 2017 are worth considering.

Volkswagen Tiguan

A new and considerably bigger Volkswagen Tiguan arrives this fall, but the current Tiguan has a nice combination of size and features that make it worth a look. Its turbocharged engine, though not great for fuel economy, is powerful, and the Tiguan's cabin is decked out in premium materials. Pricing on this model trends higher than the norm, but deals are likely to be had.

BMW X3

When it comes to luxury crossovers, the compact X3 is one of the best in its class. An all-new version arrives in November, so expect to find some good deals on the current model in the coming months. Typical of BMW, the redesigned X3 doesn't look dramatically different compared to the current model, so few will even notice that you didn't pay up for the latest model.

Nissan Leaf

One of the first mainstream electric vehicles, the Leaf is getting an extensive redesign for 2018. Sales of the new model are expected to begin later this year, so dealers will be looking to clear out the current model starting this fall. All 2017 models offer over 100 miles of range along with a very practical four-door hatchback design. If you're looking to snag a pure electric car on a budget, this is a great choice.
