The Son Of ‘Dr. Evil’
In the new film "Austin Powers In Goldmember," Seth Green makes his third appearance as Dr. Evil's son Scott, who is still craving his father's love and attention.
At 28, he's already a 21-year showbiz veteran and known scene stealer. Critics have proclaimed him as one of the hottest young actor in Hollywood.
Green joins The Early Show to discuss his new movie and the following the franchise has gained.
The new "Austin Powers" movie has the swinging international man of mystery face his arch-nemesis, Dr. Evil (played by Mike Myers), once again. This time Evil travels back in time to kidnap Powers' father, Nigel (played by Sir Michael Caine). Austin (also played by Mike Myers) visits 1975 and joins forces with his old flame, Foxxy Cleopatra (played by Beyoncé Knowles), a streetwise and stylish detective.
Mike Myers said everybody's character advances a bit from the last movie. Scott still hates Mini-me, Mini-me still hates Scott, but the battle takes on a different dimension and reaches new levels of torture.
The director, Jay Roach, said the movie depends on good actors, good comedians and good "types." He explained that Green emerged as a terrific player who balances the three elements well.
Myers called Green's work "genius" and says their improvisational scenes were fun for both actors.
"I've always been a fan of 'Saturday Night Live' and comedy that pokes fun at conventions or things that are deeply ingrained in public consciousness," says Green. "At first, we were afraid that people wouldn't get the joke, but we were lucky because the filmmakers cast the right actors, we had the right director, the right sets and lighting and music; it was impressive. It was satisfying to just be on the set and watch the process because even if nobody got the joke, we knew the movie was good. "
"The best thing I can do for the project," Green further explains, "is to do my job as well as possible. In each sequel, the cast took every funny concept and improved upon it, collaborating and taking the joke to the next place; it's not just a rehash of old material. An important aspect of the success of the 'Austin Powers' films is the attention paid to the characters as human beings. There is a genuine emotion and a natural progression of life ,even in this crazy fictional world."
Later this year, Green also stars, along with Vin Diesel, Barry Pepper, Dennis Hopper and John Malkovich, in New Line's "Knockaround Guys," scheduled for release on Oct. 11. Green just finished filming "Party Monster," portraying heroin addict/club kid James St. James in the true story of Michael Alig, with Green and Macauley Culkin as the two leads. Next month, Green starts "The Italian Job," with Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and Edward Norton. It's a remake of a Michael Caine film.
