"Smart" Clothes: Fashion With Function

These days, dressing "smart" means more than just looking good.

Now, there are clothes that can shield you from the elements - with everything from insect repellent to sunscreen - and even GPS monitors!

Early Show consumer correspondent Susan Koeppen explained on The Early ShowSaturday.

SUN PROTECTION

These are clothes and hats and swimsuits made by a company called Coolibar. They all have an SPF rating of 50-plus, which means they block 98 percent of the sun's UVA and UVB rays. The sunscreen is actually built into the fabric.

Normal clothes also offer protection from the sun, but not like these. You can actually get a sunburn through a regular pair of jeans and t-shirt!

Men's Travel Shirt $60: Also wrinkle-resistant and moisture-wicking; machine wash

Sedona Hat $30: Can be spot-cleaned

Infant Swim Romper $30: Machine wash, and hang dry

PROTECTION FROM BUGS

These are made by Insect Shield.

These are shirts and a bandana that have something the company dubbed insect shield technology built in. It protects you from mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, etc.

The company says the clothing is safe for children of all ages and women who are pregnant or nursing.

The protection is designed to last through 70 washings; you shouldn't dry-clean these items, but it's fine to throw them in the washing machine, the company says.

Insect Shield also says its protection is odorless and colorless, and it doesn't change the feel of the clothing.

Brown Crew Shirt $60

Bandana $8

CLOTHING WITH GPS TECHNOLOGY

These are from GTX Corp..

Koeppen showed a belt that comes with GPS tech, that's used right now by athletes. It can track their movements.

Koeppen also pointed to sneakers that are still being developed. The GPS device will go in their soles. They could then be used one day to track, say, senior citizens who wander away, or kids who get lost.
