Shooting at Tenn. armory kills 1; suspect in custody
LOBELVILLE, Tenn. - Officials in Tennessee said a teenage suspect is in custody following a fatal shooting at a military armory, reports CBS affiliate WTVF.
The Perry County Sheriff's Office has not released the name of the suspect, who allegedly shot a man in the chest at the U.S. National Guard Armory in Perry County around 4 p.m. Wednesday. He was arrested later that night, just before 9 p.m. The victim has also not been identified as authorities work to notify next of kin.
The victim was a sergeant first class who oversaw administrative operations at the armory in Lobelville, Tenn., about 75 miles southwest of Nashville, WTVF reports. He had worked for the National Guard for 20 years. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the teenage suspect was not a member of the Tennessee National Guard and it is unclear if he knew the victim.
"We developed leads and information and were able to take him into custody at a nearby home without incident," said Josh DeVine, the Public Information Officer for the TBI, according to the Tennessean.
DeVine said someone who lives near the armory reported hearing several gunshots fired from inside the building, according to WTVF.
The National Guard said the doors of the armory are always locked, and WTVF reports it was not immediately clear how the suspect managed to enter the facility. The TBI said they were investigating whether the shooting was random or a targeted attack.
Authorities said they were not seeking any other suspects.
According to the station, the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to a nearby hospital before being flown by medical helicopter to Nashville for further treatment. He later died from his injuries.
