Some Rock The Vote midterm PSA stars didn't vote in last midterm
When it comes to certain celebrities, perhaps it's do as they say and not as they do.
Several high-profile entertainment figures are coming under fire after appearing in a Rock The Vote public service announcement -- which urged viewers to head to their local voting centers come Tuesday for this year's midterm elections -- although many of the stars seen in the ad did not actually vote themselves during the last midterm Election Day, in 2010.
Rock The Vote, a non-profit organization that aims to get as many young people as possible into the voting booths, released the PSA last month. The clip features a star-studded lineup with testaments from celebrities who claim to have voted in the last midterm -- all done in the video as a means of getting more voters to turn out this time around.
But, according to the Washington Post, at least five celebrities who appeared in the PSA -- including "Girls" actress Lena Dunham, Whoopi Goldberg, "Orange is the New Black" actress Natasha Lyonne, "Rich Kids of Beverly Hills" star E.J. Johnson and "Glee" actor Darren Criss --- did not vote in the last midterm, according to official records from Los Angeles County and New York.
The Post also reports that the newspaper has been unable to locate local voting records for six other celebrities who were featured in the Rock The Vote video, including rapper Lil John -- who was the main star of the PSA, which served as a tongue-in-cheek parody of the music video for his hit, "Turn Down for What."
Rock The Vote has said in the past that it makes sure its spokespeople are registered to vote, but does not ensure that they have voted in every past election.
