Police: Shooter attacks family in Chicago, leaving 2 dead
CHICAGO - Two women were fatally shot and an 11-month-old baby was injured in a Chicago gunfire attack on a family Monday night that also left two men wounded, Chicago police said.
Killed was the 46-year-old grandmother and 23-year-old mother of the injured child, Deputy Chief Eugene Roy told reporters at the scene, according to CBS Chicago. The group had returned from a family event around 7:30 p.m. and were walking home in Back of the Yards neighborhood when someone in a vehicle fired at them.
"You have an innocent family coming home from a family outing," Roy said, according to the station. "In a second, two generations of that child's family were wiped out."
The two women were pronounced dead at the hospital. A police officer rushed the baby to Stroger Hospital in a squad car - a move praised by Roy.
"That action speaks for itself," the police official said. "He made the right call."
The baby was expected to recover.
The two men in the group were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital. One was in critical condition after surgery; the other was in good condition.
Roy said the shooter was "unfamiliar" to the family and that no one was in custody.
