Police: Inmates took hostages, killed guard in Mississippi prison riot
(CBS/AP) BRANDON, Miss. - One guard is dead and several others injured after a riot at a Mississippi prison that holds mostly undocumented immigrants, authorities said.
The Sunday afternoon riot at the privately run Adams County Correctional Center in southwest Mississippi involved dozens of inmates before it was brought under control that night. According to a statement released by Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield, there were at least two dozen hostages being held at one time.
Adams County Coroner James Lee confirmed that a guard died, but could not provide any more details until the correctional officer's family was notified.
The riot also caused injury to five other correctional officers and three inmates. None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to The Associated Press.
The low-security prison is owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America and holds mostly undocumented immigrants, many of whom were charged for re-entering the United States after being deported, said Adams County Correction Center spokeswoman Emilee Beach.
No inmates escaped the facility and when the riot was brought under control, inmates were searched and sent back to their cells, Beach said.
Mayfield added that prison personnel had "gained total control" of the complex. He also said the company is investigating what caused the uprising.
