Italy's Mount Etna volcano put on an impressive display Monday, spewing lava into the night sky in an explosion of fire and ash.

A new southeast crater has opened on the volcano and the latest eruption appeared to be from multiple fissures.

It's the third time in a week that such spectacular eruptions have taken place.

Etna is Europe's most active volcano. It sits on the island of Sicily above the town of Catania.

While the eruption did not pose any immediate danger to residents, the volcano certainly made its presence felt, with loud bellows and plumes of smoke and ash billowing into the air.
