Mom of slain Memphis teen says rap song describes shooting
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Family members of 15-year-old Cateria Stokes, who was shot and killed in April while sleeping in her bed, claim a song called "Lil' Homie" provides important details about her murder, CBS affiliate WREG reports.
"He put that out in the streets about my family," Cateria's mother, Joyce Stokes, said. "They didn't call no names, but everybody knows who they talking about."
Family members want to know more about what Memphis rapper Don Trip knows, based on the song they say details the day Stokes.
"We loading up the choppers 'bout to take a ride around," was one lyric, WREG reported. There's also "...just made the news. Said we just shot a baby." "Shooting *bleep* in broad day and hit some kid while she was napping," were still other lyrics that seemed to family members to refer to Cateria Stokes' murder.
The shooting described in the song was about revenge, but the rapper says the gunmen never hit their intended target."We thought we got at little buddy, but we got the wrong addy," Trip described in the song.
Still, Trip raps: "We pull up and pulled those rockets out and let them spray." The station reported that Cateria's mother was in tears Wednesday when she was played the song."Why would they kill my daughter?," she asked."They already said it's the wrong house," Stokes told WREG.
"They knew they shot the wrong house up. I ain't have anything to do with them people shooting up my house, and kill my daughter, and shoot my brother," she told the station. Stokes says the rapper who made the song went to high school with one of her sons.
She said she hopes the police take the video seriously and, at least, question the rapper. Stokes said she also wants to speak with Trip in person."It hurt me so bad that somebody want to get fame and glory -- and get famous off my daughter getting killed in her sleep," Stokes said. Memphis Police told the station they were aware of the song. However, a spokesperson would only say officers are investigating.
"Find out what you know -- why you did it. You know more about my daughter's murder and where they at," Stokes pleaded.
Police said no charges have been filed in the murder of Cateria, who was shot and killed just before 2 a.m. on April 10 while sleeping in her bed. A 61-year-old man was also shot during the incident.
The night before Cateria was shot, a 22-year-old man was shot at home about five miles away, in what police said was a drug- and gang-related incident.
The next afternoon -- hours before Cateria Stokes was killed -- 7-year-old Kirsten Williams was shot and killed while she played outside a home nearby.
Four suspects were arrested for that murder, including Cateria's older brother, Carlos Stokes, who shared an address with her. One of Carlos Stokes' co-defendants identified him as the person who planned the shooting of the 7-year-old in retaliation for the earlier shooting of the 22-year-old.
