Cops: Fla. security guard shot alleged supermarket shoplifter
MIAMI -- A supermarket security guard has been questioned and dusted for gunshot residue in the shooting of an alleged shoplifter he is said to have chased from the store in his car, reported CBS Miami.
Tony Medina, manager of the Price Choice Food Market, said two men came into the store at around 6 a.m. on Thursday morning, and one of them bought eggs and milk while a second man stuffed stolen items down his pants and tried to leave without paying.
The security guard then got in his car and went after them, Medina said. Two blocks away, they struggled and a shot was fired. The alleged thief was shot in the arm and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was listed as stable.
"If anybody is shoplifting, we take the merchandise away from them," Medina said. "If it's something really big, we call the cops." He said the guard should not have chased the men and that in the 11 years he had been working at the store, "we haven't had that type of incident."
The case is still under investigation.
