Man with machete attacks woman in New York City's Bryant Park
NEW YORK -- A man wielding a machete attacked a woman in New York City's Bryant Park on Tuesday morning, reports CBS New York.
Police say it doesn't appear that the suspect was provoked before he attacked the victim in the middle of the crowded park in midtown Manhattan. The victim, a woman whose identity was not released, suffered a substantial gash to her right arm and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce said during a press conference that the suspect told police his name is Frederick Young, but police are still vetting his identity.
The suspect is believed to be homeless. He was arrested at the scene, but has not yet been charged.
The popular park -- the former home of New York Fashion Week -- has seen violence before.
A November 2013 shooting at the Bryant Park ice rink injured two people, including a 14-year-old, and sent skaters stampeding to safety.
Police said the gunman was a 16-year-old who had tried to steal the coat of one of the victims. The suspect, now 18, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.
