Both schools posted statements saying the two students were stabbed around 2 a.m. Sunday during an altercation.
The student who was killed was taken to Cayuga Medical Center and died there. The other student was treated for injuries and released.
Sunday evening, Ithaca College identified the deceased student as Anthony Nazaire, class of 2019.
According to a statement from Ithaca, Nazaire was a 19-year-old sophomore majoring in business administration. He was orginially from Brooklyn, New York, and he graduated from Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School.
At Ithaca, he was a member of the executive board of Brothers4Brothers, a student organization dedicated to empowering men of color on our campus.
Nazaire’s godfather told CBS Radio affiliate 1010 WINS that he was the pride of the family and was never in trouble.
“Always played with you, played with his mom like a friend,” the godfather said. “I don’t know how we’re going to deal with this.”
The City of Ithaca Police Department is withholding the name of the student who was injured at this time.
The Ithaca Police Department has opened a homicide investigation and is seeking information from witnesses to the fight.
