Instagram planning a big change for video
Can't get enough of Bretman Rock's (@bretmanrock) makeup tutorials or Kai Lightner's (@kailightner) rock climbing? Instagram's got your fix.
The Facebook-owned social network will soon allow users to post videos up to 60 seconds in length, instead of the 15-second limit it's enforced until now.
"We want to bring you fun, flexible and creative ways to create and watch video on Instagram," the company stated in a blog post.
Until now, 60-second videos were the luxury of ads only. The longer video option will be available to a small group of people today and will roll out to everyone in the coming months.
"Last month we talked about our plans to double down on video in 2016, adding view counts as a first step. As part of our continued commitment, people will soon have the flexibility to tell their stories in up to 60 seconds of video. Longer videos mean more diverse stories from the accounts you love," a spokesman for the company told CBS News.
Starting today Instagram will also allow iOS users to edit together multiple video clips of varying length, up to 60 seconds.
According to Instagram's blog, users can expect to see many more new features on Instagram this year. But the not all have been welcomed by users. Plans for a new algorithm that will boost certain posts over others prompted a sustained backlash from users who want Instagram to keep showing newest posts first.
