Fla. cop on leave after firing stun gun at woman's back
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A Tallahassee police officer has been placed on administrative leave after he was caught on camera shooting a woman in the back with a stun gun, CBS affiliate WCTV reports.
In the video, which was posted Tuesday on the website YouTube, 62-year-old Viola Young can be seen approaching officers who had arrested three people and put them in squad cars.
An officer told Young to stay back, and in the video she appeared to be walking away when officer Terry Mahan approached and grabbed her left arm. Young can be seen pulling her arm away, turning around and walking several steps before the officer fired his stun gun, striking her in the back.
She then appears to fall face-first onto the street.
In an arrest affidavit obtained by WCTV, Mahan wrote that he was attempting to arrest Young because she allegedly "obstructed officers while in the course of completing their legal duties."
Officers surrounded her and eventually helped her to her feet and walked her to a squad car, the video shows.
"Based on the video, I have enough concerns to call for an internal investigation," said Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo during a Wednesday morning press conference. "We will conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. We want to be transparent with the community by sharing what we can at this point, including the video."
The Tallahassee Police Department says the officers were in the area to check out recent complaints of drug deals, according to WCTV.
Police didn't release the name of the person who filmed the incident.
