(CBS/AP) Hundreds of people have been sickened in a salmonella outbreak linked to eggs from a notorious Iowa company, and health officials yesterday expanded the egg recall from 228 million to 380 million eggs.

This is the largest salmonella outbreak of its type in years, federal officials say.

California has reported 266 illnesses since June, and believes many are related to the eggs. Colorado saw 28 cases in June and July, about four times the usual number.

Spikes or clusters of suspicious cases have also been reported in Arizona, Nevada, Illinois, Texas and Wisconsin.

The eggs were produced by Wright County Egg, of Galt, Iowa, which has been the target of government regulators for environmental violations, unsafe working conditions, and the harassment of workers, according to the New York Times.

The recall affects eggs sold under the following brands: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, and Kemps.

If you have suspect eggs, check the dates and codes stamped on the end of the carton.

The plant numbers affected are P-1026, P-1413, and P-1946. The dates (recorded in the "Julian format") range from 136 to 225, according to a statement by the Egg Safety Center. For example, eggs in a carton marked with the number P-1026 137 should not be eaten.

Consumers who have suspicious eggs can get a refund if they return them in their original carton to the store where they were bought.

"This recall is of shell eggs only. Other egg products produced by Wright County Eggs are not affected," the company said in a statement.

The CDC is working with state health departments to investigate the illnesses. Dr. Christopher Braden, an epidemiologist involved in the investigation, said no deaths had been reported.
