During Comey testimony, Trump addresses religious group
While fired FBI Director James Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee, President Trump assured an evangelical group that the U.S. would stand up for religious freedom.
"It is time to put a stop to the attacks on religion," he declared, at the Faith and Freedom Coalition (FFC) at the "Road to Majority Conference" in D.C.
Mr. Trump made no reference to Comey's testimony, which was taking place on Capitol Hill at the same time. He talked about being "under siege," too, telling the group, "And as you know, we're under siege. We will come out bigger and better and stronger than ever. You fought hard for me and now I'm fighting hard for all of you."
The FFC seeks to "influence public policy and enact legislation that strengthens families, promotes time-honored values, protects the dignity of life and marriage," based on Christian values, according to its website.
Mr. Trump also campaigned for Republicans running in the 2018 midterm elections, telling the audience that "we have to build those numbers up" to get his agenda through Congress.
"Sadly, we're going to have to do it as Republicans because we're not going to get any Democratic votes and that's a sad, sad thing."
House Republicans have passed a bill repealing the Affordable Care Act, but the Senate has not yet acted. The Senate, which has a slim two-vote GOP majority, is divided about how to proceed with the health care bill.
