Disturbing details emerge in court about last moments of slain Boston doctors

Not guilty plea in doctor murders
Suspect pleads not guilty in slayings of engaged Boston doctors 02:41

BOSTON -- A Massachusetts man charged with killing two engaged doctors in their luxury Boston condominium in May has been held without bail.

Bampumim Teixeira pleaded not guilty Monday in Suffolk Superior Court to charges including two counts of murder.

Prosecutor John Pappas said the 30-year-old Teixeira bound and stabbed 38-year-old Dr. Lina Bolanos and 49-year-old Dr. Richard Field in their home on May 5.

Pappas said Teixeira had knowledge of the layout of the couple's building because he was a concierge there briefly in 2016, according to CBS Boston. The building has a stairwell that leads from the garage to the penthouse floor.

The suspect had no known personal relationship with the victims, he said.

Pappas said Teixeira was seen lurking around the condominium complex at about 2:40 p.m. and in the garage around 4 p.m. on May 5, the day of the murders. Pappas said Teixeira entered the building through the garage with a backpack containing two replica guns, a knife and duct tape.

Bolanos returned home around 5 p.m. and Field around 6:30 that evening. Police were called to the apartment shortly after 8:30 p.m. after Field texted a friend to call 911 because there was a gunman in the house, reports CBS Boston.

Pappas said the couple was bound with duct tape. He alleged Teixeira used a large carving knife to kill them, reports CBS Boston. Family and friends of the victims were in court Monday, many of them crying as the prosecutor described their last moments.

Police responding to the friend's 911 call found keys to the unit in the hall outside the 11th-floor condo. Police, after knocking first, used the keys to enter the unit, where they made a "grisly discovery," both doctors already dead from "massive trauma," Pappas said.

Teixeira was shot by police at the scene and taken into custody.

Police recovered a carving knife in the apartment as well as a bag containing Bolanos' jewelry. The bag with the fake guns, knife and duct tape was found elsewhere in the building.

Teixeira's district court arraignment was held in the hospital, but he had recovered enough to walk into court under his own power on Monday, even saying "Good morning, what's up?" to the assistant clerk magistrate.

His lawyer, Steven Sack, did not address the charges, but did reserve the right to request bail at a future date. Sack refused comment outside court.

Teixeira is charged with two counts each of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping, and one count of armed home invasion. He is due back in court on Sept. 12.
