Daily News cover cartoon shows Trump beheading Statue of Liberty
NEW YORK -- The New York Daily News tweeted an early view of their Wednesday front cover, and the illustration on it already has people talking.
The front page appears to be a cartoon depiction of GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty.
The text is inspired by a famous passage from German pastor Martin Niemöller's lectures about the Nazis. Twitter users almost immediately began reacting to the cover, with both praise and condemnation.
After the shooting in San Bernardino that killed 14, the Daily News sparked controversy with their front page calling out Republican politicians for their prayers. The front cover read, "God's Isn't Fixing This," alongside tweets from House Speaker Paul Ryan, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul offering their prayers.
On Monday, the tabloid posted another controversial cover declaring, "Everything is Awesome," in what they said was response to those offended by the truth about the nation's gun scourge.
Trump has come under fire for weeks for various controversial comments he has made about Muslims. On Monday, Trump called for blocking all Muslims from entering the U.S.
"Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on," his campaign said in a statement.
The proposal has drawn stark criticism from both Republicans and Democrats.
