"Dad's Army" star Clive Dunn dies in Portugal

"Dad's Army" star Clive Dunn has died in Portugal at age 92, according to reports in the British media.

The London-born actor was best known as Lance Corporal "Jonesy" Jones in "Dad's Army," a popuar series that ran for nine seasons on British TV in the late 1970s. He also played Charlie "Grandad" Quick in the TV series "Grandad," which had a four-season run in the early 1980s. In both, Dunn played characters at least 20 years older than he was in real life.

According to an obituary on BBC.com, Dunn, whose famous catchphrases included "Don't panic, don't panic" and "They don't like it up 'em," recorded the hit "Grandad," in 1971. It reached the top of the charts at the time and was later used in the TV show of the same name.

Dunn, who studied at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, betgan his career on the British stage in the 1930s. There was a four year hiatus in his acting career during World War II, when he was a German prisoner.

His last performance was as the Shakespearean clown Verges in a 1984 TV version of "Much Ado About Nothing."

Retired in Portugal for the last three decades, he painted portraits and landscapes until his sight failed.

Dunn was awarded an OBE in 1975 at Buckingham Palace.

He is survived his wife, Priscilla Morgan, and their two daughters, Jessica and Polly.
