Dad: Throw book at my son for high school bomb hoax

PHOENIX -- A Phoenix father wants his teenage son charged with a crime after a bomb scare at his school.

Students and staff at Barry Goldwater High School in north Phoenix spent about two hours in the stands of the school's football stadium last Monday while the police department's bomb squad was summoned to check out a suspicious backpack, CBS affiliate KPHO reported.

Sgt. Trent Crump said the backpack found that morning in a bathroom at the school was found to contain books.

A 15-year-old is accused of a bomb hoax that forced Monday's evacuation.

"One thing I'd like to do is apologize to every parent that was scared and had to go pick up their kids the other day," said Dexter, whose last name the station is withholding to protect the identity of his son. "I'm sorry for that."

The single father said texting in a bomb threat is the latest example of the teen's disturbing behavior.

"He's on probation for threatening and intimidating - he threatened to shoot a kid at Barry Goldwater High School," the father told the station.

He also said that two weeks ago, his son was expelled for bringing a knife to the school.

"My concern is that it's just going to escalate," Dexter said. "I don't want my son to be the next headline that he took a gun to school and started shooting people," the suspect's dad told KPHO.

"I love my son," Dexter continued. "But, I love him enough to see him held accountable - very much so."

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office is reviewing the case and will decide whether to file charges.
