Cops: Armored car driver shot in head at Florida grocery store
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- An armored truck driver was shot in the head Thursday afternoon at a Publix grocery store in Altamonte Springs, and the assailants remain on the loose with stolen cash, according to police.
CBS affiliate WKMG reports that the cash carrier with Loomis-Fargo was shot in the corridor between the glass door entrance and exit of the store, which is located on State Road 436 at Palm Springs Drive in the central Florida city.
According to Altamonte Springs police, the cash carrier was ambushed by a man who fired multiple shots before stealing a bag of money. The worker was struck in the head but police said he was alert when he was taken to a hospital. He attempted to return fire, according to police.
It's not known how much money was stolen.
Police told the station that a getaway driver was waiting in a gold Nissan Maxima, and the robber and the driver have not been found. A stolen vehicle matching the description of the getaway car was found behind the store.
Altamonte Springs police described the shooter as a black man wearing a long-sleeved plaid shirt with an orange or purple hat, possibly a Phoenix Suns cap.
