Chicago 9-year-old's alleged "executioner" charged
CHICAGO -- A first-degree murder charge has been filed against a Chicago man in the November death of a 9-year-old who police say was lured from a playground into an alley and shot in the head because of his father's gang ties.
Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says 22-year-old Dwight Boone-Doty was charged Monday night in the slaying of Tyshawn Lee.
Authorities said Boone-Doty was the trigger man.
Tyshawn was shot multiple times at close range with a .40-caliber weapon, near his grandmother's house, CBS Chicago says.
The shooting was "shocking even by Chicago standards," the station says.
In a tweet, Guglielmi called Boone-Doty an "executioner." Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and State's Attorney Anita Alvarez were expected to attend a news conference Tuesday with Chicago police officials, the station reports.
Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for Alvarez, tells the Chicago Tribune that Boone-Doty was also charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in a separate October shooting.
Guglielmi says Boone-Doty was being held on unrelated gun charges when investigators connected him with Tyshawn's death. It wasn't immediately clear if Boone-Doty had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
Another man was charged with murder in November in connection with Tyshawn's killing.
Authorities didn't say at the time who they believe fired the shots that killed Tyshawn. Then-Police Supt. Garry McCarthy called the killing the most "abhorrent, unfathomable cowardly crime" in his 35 years of police work, CBS Chicago notes.
