Bin Laden's Daughter Set Free from Iran

A teenage daughter of Osama bin Laden has been released from Iran after living under house arrest there since her family fled Afghanistan in 2001, her brother says.

Iman bin Laden, 18, is now living in Syria with her mother, according to the girl's brother, Omar, and his wife, Zaina Alsabah.

The couple spoke to The Associated Press by telephone from Britain.

Alsabah said she had spoken on the phone with Iman, who is "healthy and settling in."

Many of Osama bin Laden's children escaped to Iran following the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan. They lived in a compound under Iranian guard after authorities picked them up for entering the country illegally.

Iman escaped to the Saudi Embassy, where she waited for months before being allowed to leave last week.

In a letter that surfaced earlier this month, one of bin Laden's sons called on Iran's supreme leader to release family members under house arrest there.

Khalid bin Laden's statement was posted on militant Web sites March 15. The letter itself dates back to early January, shortly after news reports of Iman's escape began to circulate.

Khalid's statement called on the Iranian authorities to release his siblings and some 25 other family members. Iran didn't confirm the reports.

Little is known about this particular son of bin Laden, who is said to be 20-years-old and was believed to have been with his father in Afghanistan until 2001.
