Babysitter charged in death of toddler dosed with Xanax
LORAIN, Ohio -- An Ohio babysitter has been charged with murder in the death of an 18-month-old girl who authorities say was given anti-anxiety medication.
Thirty-year-old Lorain resident Summer Shalodi was indicted Thursday, CBS affiliate WOIO reported.
She also faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, endangering children, corrupting another with drugs and tampering with evidence in the death of Nadia Gibbons on Dec. 13.
Detectives say emergency crews tried CPR on Nadia, but she had been dead for several hours by the time they were called.
Shalodi, a friend of Nadia's mother, was watching the toddler at the time.
The Lorain County coroner told the (Elyria) Chronicle-Telegram that toxicology tests showed Nadia had ingested Xanax.
"My daughter was a great mom and the only thing she did was trust somebody. How can somebody hurt a baby, an innocent baby," Nadia's grandmother, Toreetha Gibbons, told WOIO in December.
"She was an angel. She was a happy baby. She smiled all the time. She just brought so much joy to our family," Gibbons said.
Shalodi is free on $50,000 bond. Her attorney didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.
