ORLAND PARK, Ill. (CBS/WBBM) The husband of elementary school teacher Anita "Jeanie" Kustok shot and killed his wife of more than 30 years and attempted to make the death look like a suicide, say prosecutors.

Allan Kustok of Orland Park, Ill. is charged with the murder of his 58-year-old wife, who was found shot to death Wednesday morning in their suburban Illinois home.

Anita Kustok died from a gunshot wound to the face, reports CBS affiliate WBBM.

According to sources close to the investigation, Allan Kustok brought his wife to Palos Community Hospital and told authorities he had been awakened by gunfire in their home, according to WBBM. Saying he was grief-stricken, he reportedly cleaned his wife's face and the bedroom they shared, wrapped her in a white sheet and put her in his car.

Sources also say Kustok claimed his wife was "a proud woman," too proud for ambulances, he told authorities. His spouse had already been dead for 90 minutes, reports WBBM.

Investigators didn't believe Allan Kustok's story. He is charged with first-degree murder.

Anita Kustok taught math and reading to 3rd-through-5th grad students in a gifted students program at Central Elementary School in Riverside, about 15 miles outside of Chicago.

The death shocked members of her affluent community. Mary Dowding, the victim's neighbor, said there was never any indication of a problem between Anita and Allan Kustok.

"It's heartbreaking, devastating for all, for the kids, for the husband, for their extended family. I can't even fathom," she said.

Anita Kustok is the mother of Comcast SportsNet reporter Sarah Kustok and Zak Kustok, former Northwestern University quarterback.
