2 dozen arrested during Alton Sterling protest in Louisiana
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Roughly two dozen members of the New Black Panther Party were arrested on Wednesday during a protest that was held to mark the one year anniversary of the death of Alton Sterling.
CBS affiliate WAFB-TV reports the group was asked to leave Baton Rouge Police Department headquarters shortly after 1 p.m. because they didn't have a permit to protest.
"You can protest, you can do what you need to do, we just ask that you do it in an orderly way," said Sgt. L'Jean McKneely, Jr., a media spokesman for the department told the group.
But chaos erupted. Authorities say several individuals attempted to "storm the police barricade that was placed on the driveway" outside of police headquarters.
A struggle ensued between an officer and a protester who was armed with a Taser. The officer fired a Taser after seeing the weapon. Both the officer and the protester were struck in the arm.
Four men and three women were arrested on misdemeanor charges.
A film crew was among the group to document the protest.
Sterling was shot and killed by a Baton Rouge police officer on July 5, 2016.
