2015 Grammy nominations: What you need to know

The 2015 Grammy nominations will roll out Friday with some of the biggest stars in music competing for categories, including song of the year, record of the year and album of the year.

Here's how it will all shake out.

The Recording Academy will start announcing the nominees for the 57th annual Grammy Awards Friday on "CBS This Morning" at 8:30 a.m. ET. Then between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. ET more categories will be unveiled online and via Twitter. Finally, nominees for the biggest Grammy category, album of the year, will be announced on "A Very Grammy Christmas," set to air at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.

With so much new music coming out over the past year, it's difficult to pin down who will receive nods -- and for what -- but there are some buzzy acts that may hear (or see) their name called come Friday.

Keep a close eye on British singer Sam Smith, who could be in contention for album of the year for "In the Lonely Hour." His hit song, "Stay With Me," could also get a nod.

Smith could also see a nomination in the best new artist category. Countless acts came on the scene over the past year, so it's impossible to predict who will receive a nomination, but other potential new acts for that category include Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, pop singer Ariana Grande, Irish singer Hozier, Australian pop-rockers 5 Seconds of Summer and electronic music duo Disclosure, just to name a few.

Those same names could appear in other categories, too. Azalea will likely receive a nod in one of the rap categories, while Hozier may walk away with nomination for his anthem "Take Me to Church." Perhaps Meghan Trainor see her name for her big hit "All About That Bass."

More familiar acts are poised to get nods, too. Don't be surprised if you see Beyonce receive a nomination for her latest self-titled album or Miranda Lambert for her album, "Platinum." Taylor Swift get something for her smash hit "Shake It Off," while Emine

Some major rock acts have had albums out over the past year - and could see nods - including U2, Jack White and Bruce Springsteen.

Other acts to keep an eye on include Sia, Ed Sheeran, Aloe Blacc, Kendrick Lamar and Charli XCX.

Grammy nominations will culminate with the holiday special, which will feature performances by some previous Grammy winners and potential 2015 Grammy nominees, including Smith, Grande, Big Sean, Mary J. Blige, Maroon5, Pharrell Williams and Tim McGraw.

Former Grammys host LL Cool J will emcee the one-hour special. The Grammys really do love LL -- he's hosted the ceremony the last two years.

Winners for the 2015 Grammy Awards will be announced Feb. 8 on CBS.
