11-year-old Miami boy arrested over toy gun fight, report says

MIAMI -- An 11-year-old student at a elementary school left the school in handcuffs Wednesday morning over an off-campus fight with a toy gun, reports CBS Miami.

The incident reportedly took place Tuesday afternoon near Edison Park K-8 Center in the Little Haiti neighborhood in Miami.

Police say the 11-year-old grabbed a fellow student and threatened him with a plastic pellet gun. The aggressor allegedly ordered the other boy to say "rest in peace" and then struck him with the pellet gun.

The alleged victim reportedly told police that he believed the gun was real.

A 10-year-old witness told the station that the incident occurred a few blocks from school grounds. According to the witness, the 11-year-old suspect held onto the victim, hit him and ran off.

When asked if he thought the gun was real, the witness said he knew it wasn't when he saw the orange tip.

Another child also reportedly saw the scuffle and his father notified the principal Wednesday morning, saying a student had a gun, according to CBS Miami. School officials immediately searched the boy's backpack and discovered the toy pellet gun.

Police were then called to the school to investigate. A district spokesperson told CBS Miami that the victim never notified his parents, and when the school contacted them, his mother reportedly asked that the 11-year-old suspect be charged.

The 11-year-old has been charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault and will be tried as a juvenile, according to CBS Miami.
