Hummes is considered progressive on social issues but a conservative on Church doctrine. He was ordained a Franciscan priest in 1958. In 1998 he was named Archbishop of Sao Paulo, the largest Brazilian diocese in the country with the most Catholics in the world. In September 2003, he headed the Vatican delegation to a U.N. meeting on how to treat and combat the spread of AIDS. Hummes holds a doctorate in philosophy from the Antonianum in Rome and a specialization in ecumenism from the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey in Geneva, Switzerland. He also served as the president of the Union of Latin American Conferences of Franciscans.
