Swiss Guards Barracks

Swiss Guards Barracks
The special military guardians of the pope and palace - the Swiss Guards - live in this building with their families.

About 100 guards, who must be native Swiss and a Catholic, guard all parts of the Vatican and are usually outfitted with haberds - long staffs that are part pike, part battle-axe.

Pope Julius II signed a treaty with Swiss Cardinal Schinner in 1505 to start the Swiss Guard service.
