ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- There are now more than 9,000 coronavirus cases and 300 deaths in Maryland, according to new data released Tuesday morning.

The state health department reports at least 9,472 cases of COVID-19 in the state and 302 deaths. That's an increase for 536 cases in just one day. It also marked the deadliest day for the state since the coronavirus pandemic began.

They include patients at the Pleasant View Nursing home in Mount Airy where 24 of the residents have died.

No zip code has more cases than 21215 in Northwest Baltimore covering Park Heights and Pimlico. There are at least 155 confirmed cases here.

Deborah Yancey told WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren she is taking precautions even if others are not.

"I just saw a bunch of people on Park Heights and Cold Spring. Nobody had masks on, and they were all closer than six feet," she said. "I'm not scared. I'm doing what I have to do."

Clothing store owner Yeshiyah Israel is now also a rideshare driver as she copes with the loss in business.

She told Hellgren "the fear factor in 21215 is an 8 and a half out of 10" but she is trying to stay positive and stay informed. "21215 is the talk. You have no choice but to say 'What can I do better?'"

Taurus Barksdale is running to represent this area on the city council. He has delivered goods to many apartment buildings that house seniors.

"In these senior buildings, they're not receiving adequate supplies. We are seeing a lack of masks and a lack of gloves, and we're also seeing a lack of social distancing."

Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Letitia Dzirasa said the city will start a campaign that goes beyond social media to educate people about the dangers of COVID-19.

"Unfortunately, there is a persistent rumor that African Americans are immune to coronavirus. This is false, and the data shows that this is a very dangerous belief," Dr. Dzirasa said.

On Monday, Maryland's highest court ordered judges to limit putting juveniles in detention unless it is absolutely necessary.

During a teleconference Tuesday, the state board of education did not make a decision on when schools will reopen. Maryland's superintendent said all school systems must provide detailed home instruction plans.

"The Department along with local school system staff have been working 24/7 to ensure that there is a laser-like focus on providing continuity of learning for all students," said State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Salmon.

She said local school districts must include plans to make the internet accessible to students who do not currently have reliable access.

The Board also voted to relax some high school graduation requirements so that seniors can graduate on time.
